IWSG: Writer's Block

There are times when words and ideas flow effortlessly, from my mind to the page.
There are other times, like today, when i can't even think of a good topic to intrigue the Insecure Writers Support Group, and it's all due to the phenomenon known as writer's block.
Sometimes I can break it by simply freewriting. Other times, there seems to be no help for it, except to let my muse and writer's block battle it out til one wins.
Do you have any creative ways to deal with this problem?

21 words of wisdom:

  1. I hear stepping back for a bit can help. I've also heard the drawing or doing something else creative can break a block.

  2. I always find that taking a walk helps - something about being outside in the fresh air brings a renewed inspiration. Music is another great block-breaker for me, especially if it's a song that relates to my characters and their journeys in some way or the other :)

  3. When I hit a writer's block, I do housework. For some reason, doing the dishes (or laundry or whatever)will lead to a breakthrough. I don't know how creative that is but a clean(er) house is always a perk.

  4. I sit, close my eyes for some time to really feel what I'm feeling, and just write whatever comes out of my fingers. Usually I find that the things I write this way are some of the best I produce.

  5. Looking for inspiration is a sure way to not find it. Kind of like love, you find it when you are not most likely not looking. Stop trying so hard and the words will come :)

  6. I take a break. If that doesn't help (or makes it worse), I've found that making myself write for just ten minutes with no pressure to write more than that works. Or editing instead of writing. Good luck!

  7. No, I don't, except to write through it, and maybe take a change of scene (meaning in reality not fiction)

  8. Taking a shower, walking, and driving are my big idea moments. I read one time that writer's block was a myth and at the time had an easy time agreeing with that author. He or she, I can't remember who said this, said it was just a matter of making yourself write. Then the year my parents died, the ideas just stopped coming. I could technically write but it felt as if all the ideas and verve that usually came with them were being held behind a wall in my brain. For me, it took time and then one morning a new idea popped into my head and it has slowly been coming back. Hope this is just a little bump for you and that things settle in to normal soon.

  13. My only solution is to just force myself to write, and know that during these times it probably won't be very good writing but the important thing is to work through it.

  14. I hate when that happens. When it does I try reading or going for a walk. If those things don't help sometimes I just try to write something- even if it is about how annoying writer's block is- just to get something down on paper. Hope you have worked through it! :)

  15. Being a poet I usually write about what is happening in my life, so I hardly get writers block, if life is dull as it can be living on my own I think back to a happy occasion which may happened years ago and write about that.
    Imagination is a wonderful thing.

    Have a wonderful day.

  16. I usually watch tv, read a book, or do something else to stop thinking about it for a while, and then come back to it, hopefully with a fresh idea! Sometimes this doesn't work and I'm stuck for a while... but such is the life of a writer, right?

  17. I read something written by someone else. That often gives me a clearer head; then I often just go outside and take a long hike. Being alone and quiet away from the computer is a great way to call back that muse. Good luck.

I'll be joining the A-Zers and hope to see you.

  18. I usually pick up one of life's threads elsewhere. When I stop worrying about being stymied, the creativity usually returns. Good luck!

  19. I recently met a big children's author (Jacqueline Wilson) and one of her tips on writing was: You have to force yourself to write, even when you're not in the mood, or when you've got a writer's block. It might not come out as your best, but you will slowly train yourself to be able to write well no matter what your mood is.

Came across your blog through the A to Z List. Good luck with the challenge :)

  20. My goodness, you haven't been posting! Are you still suffering from writer's block? Just write what comes to your mind and don't worry about grammer or even content. Let it flow freeform. Write about a picture, a word, or something that happened today. If you want to write, writer's block should never be an option.

  21. When all else fails, I take a hike. That usually unclogs the word jam and I can return to my desk.

I do a lot of stomping at times, too. That's not quite as effective.
